During a series of visits to some indigenous groups near Belo Horizonte, Professor Inez Grigolo and Friar Eustáquio Alves Goveia donated, on behalf of the Augustinian Province of Our Lady of Consolation of Brazil, a gift of computer equipment for their local schools.
"As well as fostering digital inclusion, this initiative is in line with our purpose of transforming lives through education and with our mission of promoting life through formation, fraternity and social justice," said a spokesman from the Provincial communication office.
The equipment - together with food, clothes, and toys for their youngest children - was to be distributed between the schools of five Pataxó ethnic groups: Xukuru-kariri and Kamakã; Pataxó, hã, hãe, in Aldeia Katurama; Pataxó, in Aldeia Sucupira; and the indigenous community of Aranã Caboclo in Araçuaí and Coronel Murta.
A new meeting place for the community
After these successful visits, the Province of Consolation is evaluating other potential investments to benefit the community, including building a community centre that can be used as a place of worship.
The men of this Augustinian mission will continue to promote children’s literacy and school attendance, and to strengthen ties with these communities, by offering all necessary "support and respect for our indigenous brothers and sisters," said the spokesman.
